Undergraduate
Students The
California State University Forensics Program is on of the oldest
programs on our campus. Since 1951 Beach Forensics has offered undergraduate
and graduate students the opportunity to compete with the nation’s
best and brightest in policy debate, parliamentary debate, and individual
events. Today we rank among the elite in intercollegiate forensics.
Last we finished fifth iin the nation in parliamentary debate, eighth
in the nation in individual events, and qualified a team for the
elimination rounds at the National Debate Tournament (policy debate)
for the first
time in the history of our program.
While trophies are nice, they do not open the door to medical school, law school,
or graduate school. We believe that you must be a serious student while at
CSULB. Mediocre grades do not create opportunities and will not be rewarded
on our program. Our program strives to maintain a cumulative grade point average
of 3.5 or better among the undergraduate competitors.
Finally, we believe that it is selfish to learn skills and not share them.
We believe that it is important for members of our program to be active in
their community. Whether it is volunteering at a local school, in your church,
or at the local anarchist bookstore the point is that you are doing something
to make the world better. We have several opportunities to help the community
in relation to forensics as well. We currently have students helping with forensics
programs at both Milikan High School and Long Beach Jordan.
The Beach Forensics Program is committed to excellence. We produce champions
and amazing human beings. Our graduates are currently teaching in local high
schools and junior colleges, attending the top law schools in the country,
and getting PhD’s at the University of Texas, Purdue, Penn State, and
Utah. We produce excellence because we demand it of ourselves and of others.

Graduate
Students
The faculty and staff of
CSU Long Beach would like to invite qualified candidates to apply to
the graduate program in Communication Studies, at CSULB. Several issues
make Long Beach an excellent place to study and coach forensics.
1. Long Beach is a great place to live. There is not much to explain. If you
have visited you know that it is sunny and warm most of the year. Long Beach
is approximately 45 minutes south of Los Angeles.
2. We have a very good success rate at placing our students in doctoral programs.
Although many of our students choose to teach at the community college level
or to enter industry, each year several students go on to attend top doctoral
programs in the country. We currently have students working on degrees at the
University of Texas at Austin, Purdue, Penn State, and Utah.
3. We have a very high success rate of getting graduate students jobs in local
community colleges. In recent years, graduates of CSULB have been hired at
numerous West coast colleges, including Orange Coast College, Long Beach City
College, Santiago Canyon College, South Orange County, Southwestern, Rio Hondo,
and Vanguard University.
4. The faculty and administration of CSULB are dedicated to the continued development
of a nationally active policy debate, parliamentary debate, and individual
event program. Over the last seven years we have seen a 400% increase in our
budget and are able to support a full commitment to all three areas of intercollegiate
forensics.
5. Teaching assistantships and out of state tuition waivers are available for
all qualified candidates.
